*History of the spaces
Quarters (66 sqm)
The Midland Grand employed a small army of staff to carry out basic functions in guest rooms such as stoking the fireplaces, fetching and removing water for washing, and emptying chamber pots. They were dedicated to the task of meeting their guests' needs; if they failed there was always a queue of others eager to fill their shoes. The hotel needed many of them to remain on hand through the night, so there was accommodation for staff on the top floor, and this room, The Quarters, which was originally separated into four small sleeping compartments and heated by a single fireplace.
The Exchange (69 sqm)
Top hotels today are expected to make available the latest in communication technology to their guests - and it was no different when the Midland Grand was open.
Alexander Graham Bell's historic first transmission of clear speech by telephone was made in 1876, just three years after the hotel opened. The Exchange is where the hotel's telephone auto exchange was installed as soon as the technology gained widespread use.
